GISELA Latin American Institutions Contributed to it! (Higgs boson)  (04/07/2012)

The CERN Director General has announced this morning (see below) the first observation of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson. The news is transforming to a snow ball being rolling all around the world in the TV and radio flashes.

The GISELA Community is particularly excited by the information. Indeed several Latin American Institutions, members of GISELA, such as UFRJ, UNAM, ULA, etc. are using its e-Infrastructure, in the framework of the Computing model of the LHC experiments in which they participate. The figure below shows the use of the GISELA e-Infrastructure by these institutions, for their various computing tasks such as simulation of physics processes, detector data processing and physics analysis. One should emphasize that Grid e-Infrastructures is a must for High Energy Physics experiments which could not otherwise deal with the sophisticated, CPU-consuming treatment of the data provided by their particle detectors. Hence it is really wonderful to observe, on a sensational case, the actual discovery power of Grid e-Infrastructures.

We take out of the event that Latin America made the right choice when investing, since more than 6 years in Grid e-Infrastructures, through the EC co-funded projects EELA (https://www.eu-eela.org), EELA-2 (https://www.eu-eela.eu/) and GISELA (https://www.gisela-grid.eu/). Finally we take the opportunity to underline the urgency to have the Latin American e-Infrastructure operation and its User support consolidated in the long term, to sustain e-Science over the continent, beyond its current outstanding outcomes.

LA Commits to the Sustainability of the e-Infrastructure (The Mexico Declaration) (29/06/2012)

One of the most relevant outcomes of the GISELA-CHAIN Conference held in Mexico City from June 27 to 29, was the commitment of LA institutions to inherit and sustain the GISELA e-Infrastructure. CEDIA, CUDI, RENATA, Uniandes and UNAM signed the following declaration:

OurGrid version 4.2.6 released   (26/09/2011)

                  OurGrid

OurGrid released version 4.2.6 of the middleware. Again, this version comes with several bug fixes. The major ones resolved deadlock issues in the Commune components and the ones related to Worker reallocation when other components fail. Also, we are releasing Commune 1.0, which is a much lighter and faster version of Commune. This version uses JSON in the message structure, which resulted in smaller messages and faster serialization times. You can see the changelog for this version here, and you can download the OurGrid components here.

A grid cooperative   (08/08/2011)

iSGTW

Smaller experiments require a smaller grid such as OurGrid, which is both a peer-to-peer (P2P) grid middleware and a desktop grid service. It pools the computing resources of all the computers within a single laboratory or university for researchers to use. OurGrid is the ‘glue’ that brings data, computing power and human expertise together, cheaper than a centralized computing resource according to researchers who use it.

“The jobs best suited for it are small, with processing times ranging from 20-30 minutes, to a few hours,” said Francisco Brasileiro, member of the GISELA grid, based at the Universida de Federal de Campina Grande in Brazil. “Any longer and the probability that jobs will complete is very low,” he said... OurGrid version 4.2.5 released   (18/08/2011)

                  OurGrid

OurGrid released version 4.2.5 of the middleware. This version contains several bug fixes, specially a blocker one regarding file transfer (https://redmine.lsd.ufcg.edu.br/issues/779), that caused executions to hang. Improvements on logging, and the release of OurGrid Charts were also made during the delelopment of OurGrid 4.2.5.

Report about the Joint GISELA/EPIKH School for Grid Site Administrator   (12/11/2010)

The first week of the GISELA/EPIKH training events in Mexico City is ending. This first phase has been dedicated to Grid System Administrators Training, students learned how to install gLite 3.2 grid services and, now, they are remotely installing their grid sites on their institutes using the knowledge just learned (with the assistance of the GISELA/EPIKH tutors). The next phase of  the GISELA/EPIKH training events in Mexico City is going to start next Monday, this phase will be dedicate to help applications developers in the gridification of their applications. We count on having 6 new applications ported on the GISELA production grid Infrastructure at the end of this phase.
